Series-RFP: Managed VPN Appliances For Broadband SMBscontinued
Customer Network Scenarios
IPRVnet's customer base is diverse, making it difficult to identify one
target network environment to be satisfied by these managed security services.
Ideally, IPRVnet wishes to procure a single-vendor solution that is broad
and flexible enough to satisfy the majority of its business customers. Doing
so will ensure a smooth upgrade path and simplify IPRVnet's training, helpdesk,
and management/monitoring efforts.
For the purposes of this RFP, IPRVnet will use the following IP networks
to illustrate its existing/target customer base.
Scenario 1: Low-tech small office with 10-25 employees:
This small business (Figure 1) is seeking secure broadband Internet
access. Workstations on a single LAN will share Internet access through
a single IP address and NAT. All Internet services, including email, Web
hosting and the like, are provided by IPRVnet.
The office administrator requires secure
remote access to the business LAN for off-hours management. No other
VPN services are required at this time, although growth is anticipated.
Fundamentally, this customer is looking for a low-cost, no-effort,
no-worry solution. This may be a new business DSL account or an existing
account being upgraded.
Scenario 2: High-tech dot.com with 50 employees:
This new dot.com is an one site system, but most employees telework or
trave. It is (Figure 2) purchasing secure broadband access for
its company headquarters. This customer plans to host its own mail server,
but co-locate its web server at IPRVnet's hosting facility.
They want to enable employee remote access from anywhere,
via dial and broadband Internet access methods. Fundamentally, this
customer is security-minded and willing to pay for premium servicesto
a point. This company is a new sales target for bundled managed security
services.
Scenario 3: Distributed mid-size business with 200
employees:
This customer (Figure 3-Before) functions as the headquarters of
the company with four branch offices and 50 mobile users. It already has
secure Internet access in place at corporate headquarters, having deployed
a privately operated firewall in front of a dedicated T1 to IPRVnet's
regional facility.
Corporate mail and web servers are located on a DMZ
off the HQ firewall. This customer wants to replace expensive point-to-point
branch office linksnow purchased from Ma Bell, with more economical
IPRVnet DSL and Secure Intranet services.
They would also like to replace their HQ RAS with IPRVnet's
Secure Remote Access service (Figure 3-After), but continue
authenticating workers with their own RADIUS server. This customer
is an upsell target for premium and a la carte security services.
