Time Warner Telecom's nationwide network includes
over 24,000 miles of fiber in 75 markets across 30 states and Washington,
D.C.
Time Warner Telecom Inc., headquartered in Littleton, Colorado, was founded in 1993 as a joint venture with Time Warner Cable (now a unit of Time Warner Inc.). The company became a separate entity from Time Warner Cable in 1998, and went public in 1999. In 2006, TW Telecom purchased privately held Xpedius Communications, increasing the company's reach from 44 markets to 75. The company's network now includes over 24,000 miles of fiber in 75 markets across 30 states and Washington, D.C., providing last-mile, high-speed broadband access to business customers. TW Telecom's national Internet backbone is a packet over optical core network which utilizes Cisco routers and Juniper switches to provide a smart route for efficient transit. TW Telecom's IP equipment is located in hardened facilities and all routers have dual processors with spare essential parts and two separate power supplies, as part of its reliability program. The company reduces the points of failure within the network through multiple route options out of metropolitan POPs. The network utilizes PNNI routing to choose the best path across the network and minimize load balancing on routers. The company's diverse fiber paths and scalable switches allow it to quickly expand its network. TW Telecom says it does not oversubscribe the network and uses monitoring tools and forecasts to keep utilization at 60 percentwhen the IP backbone reaches 60 percent sustained utilization, processes to increase capacity are automatically triggered. TW Telecom's Dedicated Internet service provides full-service solutions for ISPs. Its MPLS-based IP backbone consists of multiple circuits with a core network operating at OC-48 speeds and some periperal locations connected via OC-12s. The backbone is connected to all of the major NAPs, with IP POPs in each of its markets. This allows direct access to its core backbone, and gives the company full control over provisioning and troubleshooting. The company currently serves customers in the following 75 U.S. metropolitan areas:
