Telstra Incorporated is a wholly owned subsidiary of Australia's ILEC, Telstra. The parent company's assets and services have a history dating back at least a century to a time when most phone and mail services were run by the governments of the world and what became Telstra was a department of the Australian government.

The parent company was incorporated in 1993, and a minority stake was issued to the public in November of 1997. A full history is available here.

The parent company is, at press time, majority owned by the Australian government, but some press reports suggest this could change. The parent company is one of the world's largest backbone providers, with a truly global presence.

Telstra USA owns an OC-48 nationwide mesh backbone connecting eight major U.S. cities: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Miami, and Washington D.C.

The company specializes in providing connections to Asia and within Asia. Bandwith to Asia is 8 Gbps of diversely routed cable and within Asia is 5 Gbps. The company's hub in Hong Kong provides a 2 Gbps connection to mainland China and Taiwan.

The parent company and its various regional subsidiaries make occasional acquisitions. Most recently, in August of 2004, Telstra Europe acquired the assets of PSINet UK.

Telstra USA's most recently announced customer win is Hyatt. The companies announced a multi-year $8.4 million global outsourcing agreement covering bandwidth and advanced services including IT consulting, MPLS technology, and robust SLAs.

Telstra USA focuses on ISPs, CLECs, and integrators serving medium and large enterprise customers who have offices or customers in the Asia Pacific region.

An interactive network map, available here, shows in detail the services available over specific routes offered by Telstra.
