Backbone Directory:
Cogent Communications
Email a colleague

Cogent owns one of the largest networks in the industry, covering more than 22,500 route miles worldwide.

Cogent Communications, founded in August 1999, owns and operates ones of the world's lowest-cost, highest-capacity IP networks. Since its founding, the company has expanded rapidly to become the largest Ethernet service provider in the United States according to Ovum—in 2004 alone, Cogent acquired nine companies.

Cogent's total of 13 acquisitions has helped to expand the company's network, which now serves over 90 metropolitan markets in North America and Europe, and encompasses:

  • 1,050 multi-tenant office buildings strategically located in commercial business districts;
  • 220 carrier-neutral Internet aggregation facilities, data centers and single-tenant buildings;
  • over 150 intracity networks consisting of over 9,000 fiber miles and ranging in capacity from 16 to 160 Gigabits
  • an 80 Gigabit (8 OC-192s) intercity network of more than 22,500 fiber route miles; and
  • four leased high-capacity circuits providing a transatlantic link between the North American and European portions of Cogent's network.

The network itself can be broken down into three key elements:

INTERCITY NETWORK. A long haul international backbone consisting of eight OC-192s (four OC-192s in Europe) that links over 90 major cities, is Layer 3 protected, and utilizes IP-over-WDM technology, making it the largest network of its kind in the industry.

METROPOLITAN NETWORK. Within each city, multiple DWDM and CWDM metropolitan rings with capacities of between 16 and 160 gigabits, providing 5 Gbps of dedicated capacity from the core router to each building node.

IN-BUILDING NETWORK. Cogent's network extends directly into office buildings, colocation centers, and data centers via Ethernet or OC-48 to reach its customer base. Cogent equipment is placed in each building, and connects via fiber or CAT-5 cable to each customer premise.

Cogent's network is built in a ring architecture, which provides two diverse paths to every building. In the event that the fiber is cut, the router detects the cut and redirects the traffic around the ring away from the cut, restoring connectivity within one second.

The company's pricing can be extremely straightforward—Cogent offers a flat rate fee of 100 Mbps for $1,000 per month. This price has been in effect since Cogent opened its doors in 1999.

In addition to Internet service, Cogent offers Native Layer 2 Point-to-Point (transport) service in all its On-Net markets.
