AT&T's global IP network covers more than 547,000 route miles, with 38 data centers on four continents.
While the history of AT&T stretches all the way back to 1876 with the founding of the Bell Telephone Company, the current company is the product of a series of recent acquisitions, including SBC's purchase of AT&T in 2005 and AT&T's subsequent acquisition of BellSouth in 2006.
Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, the company now has 309,050 employees worldwide, and boasted revenues in 2006 of more than $117 billion.
AT&T operates a global IP backbone network covering more than 547,000 fiber route miles, with 38 data centers on four continents. The network provides MPLS-based services to 140 countries via more than 3,700 nodes. In the United States, AT&T's transport network includes over 82,000 route miles of fiber in the 22-state legacy SBC and BellSouth territories, with over 6,700 SONET rings.
In March of 2008, the company announced plans to invest $1 billion to expand its network and portfolio of solutions with new subsea fiber optic cable capacity to Japan and Asia, new core MPLS routers in Europe, Asia and the U.S., new network-to-network connections in high growth markets in Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe and South America, expanded DSL access in 21 countries, and 180,000 additional square feet of data center hosting capacity.
AT&T Wholesale Services offers a wide range of products for ISPs, including Wholesale DSL Transport, Managed Internet Service (MIS), Frame Relay & ATM, and more.
The company also offers its wholesale customers a number of value added services including billing, contact management, hosting, and security, among many others.
