Telia Completes U.S. Viking Network

The international fiber network's U.S. segment links 27 cities and utilizes Lucent's OLS 400G DWDM system which is capable of speeds of up to 400 Gbps.

Telia International Carrier Inc., a Reston, Va.-based provider of global IP, capacity and voice services to the wholesale network services market, has completed the North American segment of its wholly-owned international fiber. The U.S. Viking Network links 27 major cities in the U.S.

Using advanced dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology from Lucent, Telia is able to provide high-speed telephone, Internet and data transmission throughout its U.S. network. DWDM increases network capacity by simultaneously transmitting multiple wavelengths of light across a single fiber, with each wavelength carrying a distinct information stream.

The U.S. portion of the network is equipped with the Lucent WaveStar OLS 400G—a DWDM system that provides a capacity of up to 400 gigabits per second (Gbps).

Said David Hess, president and chief executive officer of Telia International Carrier, North America, "I believe that the weakness of the current economy has actually helped to highlight Telia's strengths, primarily because we are an established and stable company positioned to meet the needs of multinational customers."

Telia also has completed the installation of the TAT-14 Atlantic cable, a transatlantic cable that connects the European and North American segments of Telia's global network.
