Register.com Lands in Brazil

With momentum building towards the rollout of new Top Level Domains (TLD) later this year, New York-based Register.com on Tuesday announced a deal to power URL registrations in Brazil.

Register.com (NASDAQ:RCOM), which will benefit from the registries for two of the seven new TLDs, said it would partner with Registro Brazil to offer full-service domain registration in Latin America's largest Internet market.

Previously, Registro Brazil was only allowed to sign up domains with the .COM, .NET or .ORG suffixes but the new partnership with Register.com would clear the way for registrations of all domain names, including special-use country codes and names with multilingual characters.

Register.com director of communications Shonna Keogan said the partnership also allows the Brazilian registrar to sell Register.com's CommerceLock digital security certificates to its end users.

"Brazil is by far the largest Internet market in Latin America. There are nine million Net users in Brazil alone so this is a very significant partnership for us."

Keogan said Register.com would collect a per-registration fee based on the volume of registrations done through the new partnership. She declined to provide details of the fee structure.

Last November, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved the rollout of seven new TLDs, including the .PRO suffix, which will be managed by Register.com, in partnership with U.K-based Virtual Internet.

Register.com will also serve as the registry for the .INFO domain name, as part of the Afilias registrar consortium.
