Luxul Comes Out With Partial NLOS Solution

The Utah-based wireless equipment maker says its broadband system can pass through some structures and ignore changes in the weather—eliminating some line-of-sight issues for wireless ISPs.

Luxul Corp. introduced its new modular LUXcomm wireless communication system this week. LUXcomm is an integrated transceiver and tower said to be ideal for Internet service providers seeking to offer wire-free broadband Internet access to their subscribers. The modular system also works well for campus-wide wireless access to local area networks.

Field-tests are complete, and Luxul says its wireless gear is good to go nationwide. Robert Ycmat, Luxul senior vice president of sales and marketing, said bad weather and structures won't hider subscriber's wireless broadband access to the Internet.

"LUXcomm is a revolutionary wireless broadband system with the capability to penetrate light structures and foliage, thus mitigating the need for line-of-sight between the transceiver and the user," Ycmat said. "The LUXcomm system operates in poor weather conditions as well as fair, providing the reliability of wired-line communications."

The LUXcomm system provides low-cost broadband wireless coverage for fixed and mobile users over 10 to 15 square miles. LUXcomm users can achieve upload and download speeds of up to 5 Mbps, although typical speeds are 1 to 2 Mbps. Even so, the performance of the LUXcomm system exceeds typical ADSL, ISDN, cable, and T1 line connections at a fraction of the cost for deployment and operation.

LUXcomm capabilities include:

  • Patent pending antenna technology providing circular polarization which minimizes multi-path attenuation
  • Provides 360º coverage in 15 square miles
  • Extended coverage up to 5 miles
  • Provides penetration through certain structures
  • Engineered as a plug and play solution
  • Raydome solution requires minimal set-up time

Kenneth Bentley, Luxul president and chief executive officer, said the company's products have been extremely well-received by networking equipment vendors, and ISPs, among others.

"Luxul posted record revenue in August and demand continues to grow," Bentley said. "We are excited to launch the new LUXcomm system and believe it will be very successful."

Pricing and availability
The LUXcomm system is immediately available for around $21K to $25K depending upon configuration. It complements Luxul's other product lines, including its wireless point-to-point connection equipment, dubbed LUXspan, as well as other intra-office wireless LAN access, and LUXlink antennas.

All Luxul equipment utilizes a trademarked type of circular polarization for superior coverage and penetration. If its success in August is replicated throughout the year, Luxul will in effect, penetrate a market that's been tough terrain for tenured equipment makers.
