Overall, WhatsUp Gold is an excellent monitoring tool for $695. It includes basic SNMP polling and trap handling, but it isn't a strong SNMP manager. Like MediaHouse ipMonitor, WhatsUp Gold really has an entirely different—broader—focus. WhatsUp Gold is a very capable Internet service monitor. Furthermore, WhatsUp Gold excels in its network-oriented approach. From SmartScan to dependencies, WhatsUp Gold applies network awareness to improve monitoring efficiency and scalability.
WhatsUp Gold makes topo map and service table "at a glance" status accessible from any web browser. It provides flexible multi-level monitoring and alerting for networked devices and services, although reporting is stronger on the network side. We believe ISPs will find WhatsUp Gold suitable for network surveillance in small-to-midsize environments, depending upon the number of services monitored and the efficiencies gained through crafty use of dependencies.
