Gateway's Cheap Servers Gateway plans to unleash a new line of Intel-based servers that will be priced as low as $599. They are targeted for use in small- and medium-sized enterprises.
Gateway, Inc. revealed plans to deliver three new entry-priced Intel-based servers. The entire line will be available on Monday, August 19th, although some products are available now. The servers will be targeted to small and midsize businesses, educational institutions, and government agencies, said Sam Salem, senior manager, server products, Gateway. The three servers, the Gateway 920 Series, the Gateway 960 Series, and the Gateway 980 Series are each priced below $2,500 (before options). All three servers feature a "tool-less chassis", a 400 MHz front side bus, HP OpenView ManageX Event Manager, Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, and Microsoft Small Business Server 2000. With a $599 entry price, the Gateway 920 Series is less-expensive than many client-side machines. It is being positioned for the small, non-IT-orieniented organization. The Gateway 960 is available in tower or 5U rack configurations, with the option of being converted to a rack later on, with the purchase of a rack conversion kit. The Gateway 980 Series server is most expensive of the three, and Gateway claims that of the three it is the best suited for mission-critical applications. Priced starting at $2,499, Gateway is positioning the 980 as the "perfect performance workgroup server for mission-critical applications such as e-mail, database, or Web applications."
