Gateway plans to unleash a new line of Intel-based servers that will be priced as low as $599. They are targeted for use in small- and medium-sized enterprises.

Gateway, Inc. revealed plans to deliver three new entry-priced Intel-based servers. The entire line will be available on Monday, August 19th, although some products are available now.

The servers will be targeted to small and midsize businesses, educational institutions, and government agencies, said Sam Salem, senior manager, server products, Gateway.

The three servers, the Gateway 920 Series, the Gateway 960 Series, and the Gateway 980 Series are each priced below $2,500 (before options).

All three servers feature a "tool-less chassis", a 400 MHz front side bus, HP OpenView ManageX Event Manager, Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, and Microsoft Small Business Server 2000.

With a $599 entry price, the Gateway 920 Series is less-expensive than many client-side machines. It is being positioned for the small, non-IT-orieniented organization. According to Gateway, the 920 is capable of meeting primary computing and networking needs, such as file and print requirements and basic applications.

The Gateway 920 comes with:

• either a single Intel Pentium 4 or Celeron processor
  
  
• ServerWorks Grand Champion SL chipset
  
  
• 128 MB of PC1600 ECC DDR SDRAM (expandable to 4 GB at the time of launch with future expansion to 8 GB)
  
  
• seven drive bays and five PCI slots, four of which are 64-bit slots
  
  
• support for fast data storage on 40, 80, or 120 GB IDE hard drives at 7200 RPM or 18 GB Ultra SCSI hard drives at 10,000 RPM
  
  
• a single 250-watt PS/2 power supply

The Gateway 960 is priced starting at $1,499. It is being marketed to small and midsize organizations that manage intensive applications with tight budget constraints. It will also be positioned as a workgroup server.

Key Gateway 960 attributes include:

• capacity for dual Intel Xeon 1.8 GHz processors up to 2.4 GHz processors
  
  
• Intel E7500 chipset, which supports Intel Xeon processors and HyperThreading technology
  
  
• 256 MB of PC1600 DDR SDRAM, expandable to 4 GB for improved overall performance, with the option of future expansion to 8 GB
  
  
• six PCI slots, five of which use PCI-X technology to support upcoming PCI-X functionality
  
  
• 18 GB, 36 GB, and 73 GB Ultra 160 SCSI hot swappable hard drives at 10,000 RPM
  
  
• dual channel Adaptec Ultra160 SCSI controllers or the ADAC RAID controller for RAID configuration with 64MB of cache
  
  
• expandability to eight drive bays, four of which have hot swap capabilit
  
  
• a single 450-watt PS/2 power supply

The Gateway 960 is available in tower or 5U rack configurations, with the option of being converted to a rack later on, with the purchase of a rack conversion kit.

The Gateway 980 Series server is most expensive of the three, and Gateway claims that of the three it is the best suited for mission-critical applications. Priced starting at $2,499, Gateway is positioning the 980 as the "perfect performance workgroup server for mission-critical applications such as e-mail, database, or Web applications." The Gateway 980 Series server offers a variety of performance and redundancy options.

The Gateway 960 and Gateway 980 will be available for sale beginning Monday, August 19. The Gateway 920 is available for immediate purchase.

Gateway's affiliate program for small businesses pays 2 percent to 4 percent of each sale.
