VA Linux System's new servers are designed for hosting, firewalls, domain names, and load-balancing applications. But the best news is—the units are priced market-right.

VA Linux Systems introduced its new series of 1U servers for deployment in large-scale operations like Web farms. According to the company, its VA Linux 1120 server is the best-value single-processor Linux system from a major vendor that starts at under $1,200.

Customers who require more processing power and memory in a 1U form factor may purchase the company's high-performance VA Linux 1220 server.

The VA Linux 1120 server features a single Intel processor that runs at speeds up to 1 GHz, multiple IDE hard drives, and up to five fast Ethernet ports. The 1120 server's dense 1U (1.75-inch high) rackmount form factor may make it a cost-effective building block for scalable Web site deployment, particularly in colocation environments where space is at a premium.

The VA Linux 1220 is available with:
  • dual processors
  • up to two SCSI or two IDE internal hard drives
  • up to 4GB of RAM
  • integrated dual 10/100 Ethernet port
  • and optional Gigabit Ethernet
VA Linux says that its 1120 server is ideal for Web serving at roughly half the price of servers from rival manufactures Compaq and Sun Cobalt.

The 1120 and 1220 servers have been designed and configured for Linux performance and include VA's "Total Linux Coverage" (TLC), support and service as a standard features. Customers requiring further fine-tuning of the operating system software can use "BOSS," VA Linux Systems' Build-to-Order Software Selector, which is supposed to enable online configuration of the operating system and applications.

Kim Chan, VA Linux Systems product manager said the VA 1120 is available from the company for the first time.

"Unlike other products in this class, the VA 1120 offers exceptional performance and density for ISP customers," Chan said. "With prices starting at $1200, the VA 1120 allows ISPs customers to be cash-smart today buying only what they need now—and expand server options tomorrow."

Ali Jenab, VA Systems senior vice president and general manager, said the VA Linux 1120 and 1220 servers offer more power, flexibility and value than other 1U servers in their class.

"By providing affordable solutions for large-scale web deployments, VA Linux is bringing the best of Open Source to Internet infrastructure in the enterprise," Jenab said.

Availability and pricing
The VA Linux 1120 and 1220 servers are available now. Pricing for the VA Linux 1120 starts at $1,182 for an Intel Celeron configuration, and $1,323 for an Intel Pentium III configuration. The default configuration, which includes technical support, for the 1120 is priced at $1,681 and the VA Linux 1220 runs for $4,056.
