Welcome,
Founded in April, 1999 by Ted Stevenson as part of internet.com's
xSP Channel, ISP-Planet was designed from the start to address the
concerns of Internet Service Providers. The site retains a proud place
in the internet.com network. Internet.com is part of Jupitermedia
Corporation (NASDAQ: JUPM).
Our companion site, the ISP-Lists,
provides a place for civil discussions about business issues that affect all
of us. Some of the more interesting discussions are published in our Best
of the Lists section.
It is a privilege
It is a privilege to be an internet journalist today. The internet was
invented several decades ago, but was not, by and large, of interest
to people outside the scientific and military communities until the invention
of the browser in 1994, which led rapidly to the birth of the ISP industry.
All of the inventors, the builders, the good and the bad, are still
around. It is a privilege to be an ISP journalist today because all
of those who built it are still alive, still talking, still giving interviews.
It is a privilege to serve and speak for the independent ISP community.
At the big providers, the technology often drives the service, delivering
the cheapest possible product for the lowest possible investment in
infrastructure, and minimal customer service in a process the industry
calls "best effort"a process as friendly as the phone tree in
an IVR that hangs up on you.
ISPs that are small businesses are different. ISPs whose founders
still breathe life into the business have an ethos, a purpose, to do
right by the customer. ISPs that are small businesses are knit into
the fabric of local America, whether they're in the biggest cities or
the most remote rural areas.
It is a privilege to be able to work with this industry's conference,
ISPCON, and to meet so many ISP owners and the people from the companies
that supply the industry.
It is a privilege to run the ISP-Lists, where the industry talks between
conferencesand even during ISPCON.
Welcome.
If you're new to the industry, we recommend that you start in our resources
section (see the left navigation bar). If you're a veteran, you might
want to start at your job function or by checking the profiles to see
if we've interviewed anyone you know. We have an RSS feed (see the page
footer) and newsletters (right column) to help you keep track of what
we're doing.
Of course, visiting the ISP-Planet home page works for that too. You
can return to the ISP-Planet home page by clicking on the ISP-Planet logo
in the left margin of pages other than this one (where it is at the top
of the page).
And once you've looked around, feel free to click on the feedback
button at the bottom of the page and tell us what you think.
All the best,
Alex Goldman
